| If you connect your PC to the internet it will be under constant attack. |
| These days there are so many malicious programs that are
around, just waiting to get on to your computer, that it is essential to
take certain precautions to protect it and ultimately protect
yourself! These are mainly software programs, but precautions should
also be taken in the way that things are done.
|
Antivirus SoftwareTop priority. This is essential to help stop your PC from being infected by a Computer Virus. This must be up to date. New updates for detection are released almost daily. If your subscription or software is out date you are at risk! There are some good free programs available for home use. |
Firewall |
| If your PC is connected to the internet with a broadband connection you need a Firewall. Firewalls can be a Software program or a Hardware device. |
| The Windows XP operating system has a built in software
firewall (if enabled). It works, but is not very easy to
configure. There are some free (for home use) Software Firewalls available.
they block the standard inbound ports and gives you
complete control over every program on your PC whether you allow it to
connect to the internet or not. Most good routers have a hardware
Firewall built in to them to protect your PC from inbound attacks.
Using both a Hardware and a Software firewall is good security.

Spyware/Adware/Worms and Trojans |
| As you use the internet, there are processes and programs that connect to your PC. These programs are not so innocent as some may have you believe. Even if some are harmless they will affect your internet browsing and privacy. |
| Some Trojans and Spyware use Keylogger properties to try to get passwords and other private information. It is essential for your security not to allow this. Things have evolved from just using tracking cookies to programs that hook in to your operating system and internet browser. |
| If while connected to the internet, you have an unbelievable amount of popup ads or email spam and your web pages are taking a while to appear, there is a good chance your PC may have been hijacked. Some hook in to your internet browser and change your default home page, but some clever ones hijack your internet connections and reconfigure it to download and upload data they want without you knowing and without your permission. |
| This will also slow down you PC and cause operational
problems.
These problems can range from having your internet hijacked to not even being able to connect. If your internet is hijacked you may not be able to visit any sites except the ones they send you to. |
| There is software around that will help remove this and
even prevent it to some extent. This software will not always solve
your problems, depending on how the programs are installed or hooked in
the your PC. However it is prudent to have it. There are some
free ones available. Depending on the authors, performance varies
from a limited job to very good, even better than some purchased ones.
Note: Be careful if you download free spyware scanners, some are bogus and will infect your PC with spyware. The same can be said of any software you choose to download, make sure you know it is trusted, it could be a Trojan. Here is a link to a list of Bogus Spyware scanners

Premium Rate Dialers |
|
Premium rate Dialer software disconnects you from your internet connection and then dials premium rate or international phone numbers to using your modem. Charges are then billed to your phone number as you were no longer using the internet on your low rate 0845 number or free dialup. Dialers are usually installed by activeX plugins. Be very careful clicking Yes to any popup windows saying that you agree to install the plug in! Once the dialer is installed if it is from a malicious company, it may connect automatically at anytime and run up a large telephone bill. Dialers are usually installed from Hacking sites, Pirate software sites and Adult sites. Do you need to check the nature of a premium rate number that has appeared on your telephone bill? If you have been a victim you may be able to claim compensation from ICSTIS. Visit their website for more information, www.icstis.org.uk

Keep Your Windows Operating System Up-to-date |
| It is important to keep Windows up-to-date. New problems and weaknesses are constantly being found in Windows. Hackers use these weaknesses to create, viruses, worms and other exploits. Microsoft write fixes, patches and updates to plug these security holes. This is a constant occurrence. |
| In Windows NT/XP/2000 it can be configured to be updated automatically. If your Internet connection is not a broadband connection, it may be a good idea to configure the auto update options to only alert you that new updates are available, and download the updates when you are ready. |
| Microsoft Releases Service packs periodically which should
be installed to improve your operating system and enhance security.

Bogus emails and Telephone Scams |
| Beware of bogus emails. There is always someone for
various reasons sending junk email (SPAM), but some of them are planning
to trick you in to doing something. This can be to open them to run
a virus or to try to get information from you to use fraudulently.
If you have an ebay or Paypal account, it is now very common to get bogus emails warning you to log in to your account through a link and verify your account information or it will be suspended!. Of course this is bogus and should not be done. Contact ebay for confirmation or to warn them if you have done this.
|
The email contains a virus attached to it called installer.exe. Typically a WORM. It will disable Firewalls and Antivirus software and harvest your email contacts and spread the worm to them. The links in this email seem to be valid Microsoft site links, but sometimes will be bogus links. It is very easy to copy a website and make a few changes so it looks like the real McCoy, be wary and always check the links. Hover your mouse over them and the bottom of your internet browser should show the web site address. Check it has the official website address.

wary of emails asking to confirm data.

Telephone ScamsBe wary of businesses contacting you as an individual or as Business to Business. There are so many scams around and it's easy to fall foul of them. Remember all transactions should be slept over and you have time to read and agree to them. Many record you stating they are recording you wanting you to say that you accept the deal and then they say they have evidence that you agreed to it. Good examples of this are publishing companies offering to advertise for you in wall planners or other publications.
